Aims and Ethos
When you visit Yewlands Academy, you will see:
Strong relationships at the heart of everything we do.
Staff know students well and work closely with families to ensure every child feels safe, valued, and supported. Form Tutors act as the ‘parent in school’, providing daily guidance, care, and high expectations, while Heads of Year and pastoral leaders ensure a strong sense of belonging for every student
A calm, purposeful learning environment built on clear routines.
Our shared routines are visible across the academy. Students move with pace and purpose, enter classrooms calmly, and conduct themselves in a way that supports disruption-free learning. These consistent expectations create clarity, security, and maximise learning time for all
High expectations matched with warmth and care.
We take a Warm/Strict approach: recognising and rewarding the vast majority of students who meet expectations every day, while addressing poor behaviour fairly and consistently. This balance ensures students feel supported, challenged, and proud of their conduct and achievements
Staff who go beyond the classroom.
Teachers are subject specialists who are passionate about their disciplines, but they also invest time in enrichment, clubs, trips, and wider opportunities. These experiences strengthen relationships, develop character, and help students grow in confidence and aspiration
A strong culture of respect and responsibility.
Courtesy, smart appearance, and respectful communication are expected from everyone. Students address staff formally, follow instructions first time, and take responsibility for putting things right when mistakes are made. This shared commitment creates a welcoming and respectful community
Pastoral structures that remove barriers to learning.
Tutors, Heads of Year, and pastoral staff work together to monitor attendance, behaviour, and wellbeing, ensuring early support is put in place when needed. Students are encouraged to take pride in themselves, their tutor group, and the wider academy
A community driven by pride, ambition, and shared values.
Through our house system, rewards, and recognition, students are encouraged to contribute positively, show teamwork, and strive to be their best. Our motto, Fortius Erimus – We Grow Stronger, reflects our belief that success comes through consistency, effort, and working together
