Work With Us at Yewlands Academy

Yewlands Academy is an ambitious, oversubscribed 11–16 secondary school serving the north of Sheffield. We are proud of our strong culture, clear routines, and unwavering belief that every child has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach disruption-free.

Our approach is unapologetically clear. We believe that great schools are built on strong relationships, consistency, and high expectations, applied fairly and compassionately by every adult, every day. This is what we call The Yewlands Way. We are seeking staff who are excited by this clarity and who want to be part of a team that works relentlessly together to create calm, purposeful classrooms where learning time is protected and valued.

Our Culture: Warm, Strict, and Purposeful

At Yewlands, culture is everyone’s responsibility. We take time to build positive relationships with students and families, but these relationships are always underpinned by clear boundaries, shared routines, and mutual respect

We adopt a warm/strict approach:

  • We are warm, visible, optimistic, and respectful.
  • We are strict in our expectations because consistency protects learning and wellbeing.
  • Students are expected to respond respectfully to every adult. Staff are expected to uphold academy routines consistently — in classrooms, corridors, and social spaces — so that students experience clarity rather than contradiction.

If you believe that kindness and high standards go hand in hand, you will feel at home here.

Teaching and Learning at Yewlands

We are a knowledge-rich, evidence-informed academy. Our teaching is grounded in:

  • Explicit instruction
  • Clear modelling
  • Structured routines
  • Calm, disruption-free classrooms

We do not expect staff to guess “what good looks like”. Our pedagogy, behaviour systems, and lesson routines are clearly defined and deliberately consistent across the academy.

Teachers at Yewlands:

  • Are subject specialists who value deep knowledge
  • Believe that students learn best through expert instruction
  • Understand the importance of rehearsal, retrieval, and practice
  • Value calm classrooms as the foundation of learning

Staff are supported through coaching, collaborative professional learning, and shared practice. Lesson visits are developmental, respectful, and focused on improving learning — never judgemental.

Leadership at Every Level

At Yewlands, every adult is a leader. While we have a Senior Leadership Team, we do not believe leadership is defined by title. Students are expected to respond to all adults — teachers, support staff, leaders — with the same respect. In turn, all adults are expected to model professionalism, consistency, and optimism. Leaders are visible, supportive, and present across the academy every day. Our role is simple and fundamental: to enable learning by removing barriers for staff and students.

Who Should Apply

We are keen to hear from people who:

  • Believe that clear routines and consistency improve outcomes for all
  • Are aligned with a warm but uncompromising approach to behaviour
  • Value teamwork, shared responsibility, and professional trust
  • Are reflective, resilient, and committed to continual improvement
  • Want to work in a school where expectations are explicit and upheld

We welcome applications from experienced colleagues, early-career teachers, and skilled support staff. What matters most is alignment with our culture and values, not a particular career stage. This role is not suited to those who prefer a loose or inconsistent approach, or who are uncomfortable with whole-school systems and shared accountability.

Why Join Yewlands Academy?

By joining Yewlands, you will:

  • Work in a calm, orderly environment where learning is prioritised
  • Be supported by clear systems that reduce workload and uncertainty
  • Be part of a team that values professionalism, kindness, and ambition
  • Receive high-quality professional development aligned to evidence and practice
  • Make a genuine difference to young people’s lives, every day
